2011-12 Non-Conference Schedule

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s basketball squad will face four Big 5 opponents, including home games against Atlantic 10 foes La Salle and Temple, as the Blue Hens’ 2011-12 non-conference schedule was announced Thursday.

Delaware opens its slate on Friday, Nov. 11 with a road game at Radford, a contest that will feature the first ever meeting between the Blue Hens and Highlanders. A week later UD travels to The Pavilion on Friday, Nov. 18 to take on Big East opponent Villanova. The Wildcats spent much of last season ranked among the nation’s Top 10 before faltering down the stretch and falling to George Mason in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Delaware plays its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when the Blue Hens welcome Cornell to the Bob Carpenter Center, and remains home on Saturday, Nov. 26 to face long-time East Coast Conference rival Lafayette.

The Blue Hens head north for the first of two trips to Boston on Wednesday, Nov. 30 to face Boston University in a return game from an ESPNU BracketBusters contest in Newark in February, 2010. The Terriers, another former UD conference rival, claimed the America East title this past spring to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

After a CAA game on Saturday, Dec. 3, Delaware will play two local road contests during the following week. The Blue Hens head to The Palestra to take on Penn on Wednesday, Dec. 7, before renewing the Route 1 Rivalry with Delaware State on Saturday, Dec. 10 in Dover.

UD returns home to host La Salle on Monday, Dec. 19, the Explorers’ first trip to Newark since November, 2001. Following a road game at Howard on Thursday, Dec. 22, the Blue Hens close out the calendar year by hosting Temple for the second time in three seasons on Friday, Dec. 30. The Owls, who finished second in the Atlantic 10 regular season standings before defeating Penn State in the NCAA Tournament first round, received votes in the final Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Top 25 polls this April.

Delaware will also appear in the ESPNU BracketBusters for the seventh consecutive season, and will play a home game as part of the event on Saturday, Feb. 18.

The Blue Hens will again play an 18-game Colonial Athletic Association schedule featuring two games against Drexel, Georgia State, Hofstra, Northeastern, Towson, George Mason and UNC Wilmington. Delaware will also face Old Dominion and VCU at the Bob Carpenter Center, while travelling to James Madison and William & Mary. The CAA schedule is not expected to be released until October.
