NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s basketball team will host Hampton University on Saturday, February 18 at 2 p.m. as part of the 10th annual Sears BracketBusters, it was announced Monday.
The contest will be Delaware’s seventh in the event, which began in 2003 and this season features 142 teams from 16 conferences. Twelve of the 71 games will be televised on the ESPN networks on February 17-19, with the remaining games being played on February 18. The Hampton-Delaware game will not be televised.
The Blue Hens are currently 9-12 overall and 5-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association this season and have split two games with MEAC schools, defeating Delaware State, 58-42, on December 10 before suffering an 88-83 overtime loss at Howard on December 22. Delaware is led by sophomore guard Devon Saddler (at right), who ranks second in the CAA and 24th nationally with 18.9 points per game, while junior forward Jamelle Hagins ranks second in the league with 10.7 rebounds per game to go with 12.7 points per outing.
Hampton is currently 8-14 overall and 3-5 in the MEAC this season, and the Pirates are 1-1 against CAA teams with a 73-58 victory over William & Mary and a 74-67 loss at James Madison.
Darrion Pellum leads Hampton with 18.4 points per game, which ranks 32nd in the country, while David Bruce is the other Pirate averaging double figures at 10.9 points per contest.
This year’s matchup will be the fifth consecutive year the Blue Hens and Pirates have faced each other, with Delaware taking three of the first four meetings. Hampton won the first matchup in 2007-08 before the Blue Hens captured the last three, including last season’s 55-53 triumph in Hampton.
As part of the BracketBusters contract, Delaware will play at Hampton in a return game during either the 2012-13 or 2013-14 seasons.
