Saddler, Hagins Named Second Team All-CAA; Hagins All-Defensive, Threatt All-Rookie at CAA Men’s Basketball Awards Banquet

Athlete photoRICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware sophomore Devon Saddler and junior Jamelle Hagins were each named second team All-CAA, while Hagins was also selected to the All-Defensive Team and Jarvis Threatt earned All-Rookie honors at the CAA Men’s Basketball Awards Banquet at the Richmond Downtown Marriott Thursday night.

Saddler (above right), the CAA Rookie of the Year last season, leads the Blue Hens, ranks second in the CAA, and is 28th in the nation by averaging 18.7 points per game. He has surpassed the 20-point mark 13 times this season, and has led Delaware in scoring during 16 of the Blue Hens’ 29 games. Saddler, who already ranks 32nd in school history with 952 career points, also ranks fourth in the CAA with 35.1 minutes played and an 81.4 free throw percentage.

Hagins (at left) was named to the CAA All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive season while earning his first All-Conference award. The school’s career leader with 202 blocked shots, he ranks second in the league and tied for 12th in Division I with 2.93 blocks this season. Hagins also ranks fourth in the nation with 11.3 rebounds per game, has recorded 14 double-doubles on the season, and is second on the Blue Hens by averaging 12.7 points per contest.

Athlete photoThreatt (below right) came on during the final six weeks of the regular season, reaching double figures in eight of the final 12 games to end the campaign ranked third on the Blue Hens with a 9.8 points per game average. A four-time CAA Rookie of the Week award winner, Threatt scored a UD freshman record 30 points during the double overtime win over Georgia State on Jan. 21 and added 29 during the victory at Towson on Feb. 22.

George Mason forward Ryan Pearson was named the CAA Player of the Year and was joined on the first team by Kent Bazemore of Old Dominion, Bradford Burgess of VCU, Frantz Massenat of Drexel, and Keith Rendleman of UNCW. Saddler and Hagins were joined on the second team by Chris Cooper of Old Dominion, Samme Givens of Drexel, and Mike Moore of Hofstra.

Jihad Ali of Georgia State, Eric Buckner of Georgia State, Humpty Hitchens of James Madison, Jonathan Lee of Northeastern, Juvonte Reddic of VCU, and Darius Theus of VCU comprised the third team All-CAA.

Threatt was joined on the All-Rookie squad by CAA Rookie of the Year Damion Lee of Drexel, Quincy Ford of Northeastern, Adam Smith of UNCW, and Marcus Thornton of William & Mary. Hagins was joined on the All-Defensive Team by Bazemore, the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, Buckner, Robert Nwankwo of Towson, and Briante Weber of VCU.

Athlete photoThe fourth Blue Hen to be honored was junior Will Townsville, a management major at UD who was named CAA All-Academic Honorable Mention for the second consecutive year. The first team consisted of Ali, Trian Iliadis of Old Dominion, Quinn McDowell of William & Mary, Dwan McMillan of Hofstra, and Tim Rusthoven of William & Mary. Lee, Brandon Britt of William & Mary, James Fields of Georgia State, Erique Gumbs of Towson, and Tanner Milson of UNCW comprised the second team, while Townsville was one of 12 players who earned honorable mention recognition.

Bruiser Flint of Drexel was named the CAA Coach of the Year, while William & Mary’s McDowell and Georgia State’s Ali each earned the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award.

Delaware, which enters the tournament with a 17-12 record and has won its last eight games, is the No. 5 at the championship being held this weekend at the Richmond Coliseum and will take on No. 12 seed Towson in a first round game Friday at 2:30 p.m. The winner of that game will face fourth-seeded Old Dominion Saturday in the quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. The tournament continues through Monday with the champion earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
