University of Delaware Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach Mike Pegues Accepts Position at Xavier University

NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware men’s basketball assistant coach and program all-time leading scorer Mike Pegues has accepted an assistant position at Xavier University, Musketeers head coach Chris Mack announced last month.
Pegues recently completed his second year as an assistant coach under Delaware head coach Monté Ross, and played an integral part in the Blue Hens’ resurgence this season.
During his first year in Newark in 2010-11 Pegues helped UD to a seven-win improvement over the previous season as the Blue Hens finished 14-17 overall and advanced to the CAA tournament quarterfinals. This year Delaware finished 18-14, posted an eight-game winning streak from Feb. 1 through Mar. 2, again advanced to the conference quarterfinals, and earned a berth in the College Basketball Invitational.
Pegues, who worked primarily with the Blue Hen post players, was instrumental in the development of Delaware forward Jamelle Hagins. The rising senior was an All-CAA Second Team, CAA All-Defensive Team, and NABC All-District Second Team selection this season, and was also named to the CollegeInsider.com Defensive Team for the second consecutive year.
Pegues, a 2000 UD graduate, scored 2,030 career points from 1996-2000 and became the first Delaware men’s player to be named conference Player of the Year when he earned the honor in the America East Conference. He was inducted into the UD Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.
Following his career at Delaware he went on to play professionally in Italy, New Zealand, England and Argentina, as well as one season in the Continental Basketball Association. After serving as an assistant coach for three years at Bishop O’Connell (Va.) High School, he spent the 2009-10 season as the video coordinator at VCU.
“We really appreciate all the hard work that Mike has put in since returning to Delaware and thank him for the contributions he made in helping our program improve,” said Ross. “This is a great opportunity for him and we wish Mike all the best as he moves on to Xavier.”
