Weaver Leads Blue Hens to Best Finish Since 2002 at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Delaware men’s cross country team showed improvement for the fourth straight year with an 11th place finish and the Blue Hen women registered a 16th place showing to highlight action at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Saturday at Penn State University.

Andy Weaver (at right) led the UD men as he posted a 24th place finish in the individual standings with a time of 31:01 over the 10-kilometer course. The Hens earned 336 points to finish 11th overall, marking the third straight year the Hens have improved after finishing 16th in 2006, 15th in 2007, 14th in 2008, and 13th last season. The 11th place finish was the Hens’ highest since a ninth place showing in 2002.

Princeton won the men’s team title with 53 points followed by Villanova, Georgetown, Penn State, Navy, Penn, American, Duquesne, La Salle, and Maryland. Ayalew Taye of Georgetown won the individual title with a time of 30:05.

On the women’s side, Delaware finished 16th overall with 427 points led by a Jessie Ermak’s 67th place finish in a time of 22:33 on the six-kilometer layout.

Villanova won the women’s team title with 29 points followed by Georgetown, Penn State, Princeton, West Virginia, La Salle, Bucknell, Pennsylvania, Lehigh, and Navy. Sheila Reid of Villanova was the overall winner with a time of 19:34.

In addition to Weaver for the UD men, Dan Feeney was 58th (31:51), Ryan Kaiser was 80th (32:24), Ed Bonnevie finished 84th (32:29), Steve Vincent was 90th (32:35), Taylor Hinson posted a 128th place finish (33:33), and Marshall Hawkins came in at 129th (33:37).

Also for the UD women, Jen Watunya was 71st (22:36), Katy Loughran was 88th (22:51), Christine Sloat was 98th (23:01), Katie Deinert came in 103rd (23:07), Karen Mandrachia placed 135th (23:44), and Ali Lambert was 165th (24:37).
