Athlete photoREHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- Recent University of Delaware graduate Justin Martinson fired a three-round 11 under par and cruised to a six-stroke victory this week at the Delaware State Golf Association Open Championship.

Martinson, who graduated from UD this spring following a stellar three-year career with the Blue Hen men’s golf team, opened the tournament on Monday with a three under par 68 on the par 71, 6,480-yard course at Kings Creek Country Club. He followed with a four under par 67 during Monday’s second round, before his final round of 67 on Tuesday to finish with an 11 under par 68-67-67-202.

Martinson easily finished ahead of Chris Wisler, who placed second in the prestigious event with a five under par 69-66-73-208.

Additionally, 2009 UD graduate Tommy Ellison finished fourth at the tournament, posting a two under par 70-74-67-211. Ellison was a four-year letterwinner at Delaware and also served as an assistant coach with the squad this past season.

Martinson, who finished ninth at the Delaware Open and won the DSGA Amateur last summer, recently completed an outstanding career at Delaware.

He captured six tournament titles during his three-year Blue Hen career, including the 2010 CAA Championships which led to him being named the league’s Player of the Year and earning a spot on the all-conference second team. This past season he was a first team All-CAA selection, when he again led UD with a 73.83 average round.

Martinson ended his Delaware career as UD’s leader with a 133 two-round score, 12 career rounds in the 60’s, and a 73.53 career average round. Additionally during his three years in Newark he produced three of the seven lowest single season stroke averages and carded six of the 14 lowest rounds in Blue Hen history, including a school-record 64 last October.
