NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware men’s golf head coach Mike Keogh has announced that Blue Hen rising seniors Greg Matthias and Stephen Scialo have been named co-captains for the 2011-12 season.
Matthias (at right) ranked fourth on the Blue Hens this past season by averaging 77.40 shots per round, as he participated in all of Delaware’s 12 tournaments on the year. He twice fired season-low rounds of 72 at both the Sea Trail and Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiates, and posted his best finish by placing 13th at the Villanova Wildcat Invitational on April 3-4.
Scialo (at left), who like Matthias also competed in all 12 tournaments in 2010-11, finished third on the squad with a 76.87 average round. He fired a career-low 68 during the season-opening Turning Stone Intercollegiate, and finished a season-best eighth at the Wildcat Invitational. Scialo also had an impressive showing at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, tying for the best finish by a Blue Hen by placing 11th at the tournament.
Scialo’s 76.56 average round through his first three seasons puts him in eighth place on the Delaware career list, while Matthias is just behind in 10th place with a 76.76 career average round.
Both Matthias, a sport management major, and Scialo, a finance major, have also excelled in the classroom at Delaware, as both Blue Hens are Dean’s List students.
“It is good that Greg and Stephen have numerous tournaments under their belts from the previous three years,” Keogh said. “They have produced low rounds, as well as rounds they wish they could have over. That knowledge gained can be passed back to the younger players, and that experience should help our team greatly next year.”
