RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman midfielder Brenden Gilson, who scored a big fourth-quarter goal to lead the Blue Hens to a key 9-7 Colonial Athletic Association men’s lacrosse victory over Drexel Saturday, has been named the CAA Rookie of the Week.
Gilson (at right), a landscape and design major from Montclair, N.J. (Salisbury, Conn. School), earns the award for the first time in his career and becomes the third UD player honored by the CAA this season. Freshman midfielder Dan Keane was named Rookie of the Week on Feb. 14 while senior goalkeeper Noah Fossner was last week’s Player of the Week.
A member of the Hens’ second midfield unit, Gilson picked a good time to score just his second career goal Saturday as he took a feed from Eric Smith and scored past All-American goalkeper Mark Manos to give the Hens an 8-6 lead with 9:02 left play. The goal was the only man-up score of the day for either team and came on Gilson’s only shot attempt. Delaware rallied from an early 5-2 deficit to pick up its third straight win.
Delaware, ranked No. 18 in the nation last week, moved on to a 9-7 win and remained atop of the CAA standings with a 3-0 league mark and 7-3 slate overall. The 3-0 start is the best for the Hens in league play since 2000 and Delaware has now defeated eight straight league opponents, the team’s longest streak since winning 11 straight over three seasons in 1998-2000.
The Blue Hens be looking to extend their win streak to four games this Saturday when they travel to Villanova (7-3) to take on the previously No. 8 ranked Wildcats at 7 p.m. Villanova is coming off a 12-8 setback to then No. 2 Notre Dame Saturday.
Gilson was a two-year varsity starter in both lacrosse and soccer at the Salisbury (Conn.) School and led the lacrosse team to back-to-back 13-1 records and a league championship. He was voted to the All-League team in lacrosse as a senior.
In addition to Gilson, also honored by the CAA was Player of the Week Jamie Lincoln of Hofstra.
