RICHMOND, Va. -- For the second time in the last three weeks, University of Delaware freshman midfielder Brenden Gilson has been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week.
Gilson (at right), a landscape and design major from Montclair, N.J. (Salisbury {Conn.} School), led the No. 19 ranked Blue Hens to a 2-0 week as Delaware posted road wins of 14-11 over Dartmouth and 10-6 over CAA foe Saint Joseph’s.
Delaware will continue action this Saturday, Apr. 23, when the Blue Hens host Penn State in the regular season finale at Delaware Stadium at 7 p.m. as part of Military Appreciation Day. A win by Delaware would clinch a home berth in the CAA Tournament for the Hens.
Gilson, who also won the CAA weekly award in Apr. 4, scored a goal in each game last week, upping his season total to four to lead all Blue Hen rookies.
He scored on his only shot vs. Dartmouth, netting a goal with 2:07 left in the first quarter to give the Hens a 5-3 lead they never relinquished.
Against Saint Joseph’s, he scored a man-up goal during the first minute of the final quarter to push Delaware’ advantage to 7-3. The win clinched a berth in the upcoming CAA Tournament for the Blue Hens.
The Hens have earned four weekly CAA awards this season. In addition to Gilson’s two honors, Dan Keane earned CAA Rookie of the Week laurels on Feb. 14 and goalkeeper Noah Fossner was selected as CAA Player of the Week on March 28.
