Unbeaten Blue Hens Move Up to No. 16 in USILA Top 20 Poll; Host No. 9 Johns Hopkins Tuesday at Delaware Stadium

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team, off to an impressive 3-0 start, moved up one spot to No. 16 in the first regular season United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Coaches Association NCAA Division I Top 20 poll announced Monday.

Delaware also received votes in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll with Hopkins earning a No. 9 ranking.

The Blue Hens (3-0), who have started the year with home wins over Detroit, Presbyterian, and Marist, will put that unbeaten mark on the line Tuesday when Delaware hosts No. 9 John Hopkins at Delaware Stadium at 6 p.m.

Season ticket packages are still available as are single game tickets, which can be purchased at the gate for $5 (adults) and $3 (youth 17 and under and seniors 60 and over). Students with valid identification are admitted free.

Delaware, looking to start 4-0 for the first time since 2008, stayed unbeaten with an 8-7 victory over Marist Saturday as Eric Smith notched his second straight hat trick. Johns Hopkins (1-0) opened the season with a 10-6 victory over Towson behind Kyle Wharton’s three goals.

Virginia took over the top spot in the USILA poll, earning five of the 10 first place votes while Syracuse was at No. 2 with the other top five votes. Notre Dame was third followed by Maryland, Stony Brook, Cornell, Hofstra, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio State, Georgetown, Loyola, Delaware, Denver, Army, Yale, and Drexel. Delaware and Ohio State are the only teams with three victories so far this season.

Syracuse is at No. 1 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll with 15 first place votes and is followed by Virginia (2), Maryland, Notre Dame, Cornell, Stony Brook, Princeton, Hofstra, Johns Hopkins, Duke, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Loyola, Georgetown, Ohio State, Denver, Army, Yale, Drexel, and Villanova.
