RICHMOND, Va. -- It was quite a collegiate debut for University of Delaware men’s lacrosse goalkeeper Chris Herbert (at right) last week.
Thanks to Herbert’s play in Delaware wins over Detroit and Bucknell, the redshirt freshman has been named the first weekly Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, the league announced.
An honor student in political science from Mansfield, Mass. (Xaverian Brothers High School), Herbert shared the weekly honors with Massachusetts Will Manny, who was named the CAA Player of the Week.
Herbert, who took over the starting spot in goal with the graduation of three-year starter Noah Fossner, was outstanding last week as the No. 19 ranked Blue Hens opened the season with a 19-6 win over Detroit on Feb. 4 and with a thrilling 11-10 overtime victory over No. 12 Bucknell this past Saturday.
The Hens (2-0), who helped give head coach Bob Shillinglaw his 300th career victory vs. Detroit, will return to action this Saturday when Delaware travels to Baltimore to take on Loyola at 1 p.m.
Herbert turned back 15 shots while allowing just six goals in the win over Detroit and followed with eight saves in the victory against Bucknell. Among the saves vs. Bucknell was a key stop in overtime that allowed the Hens to pull out the victory when Danny Keane scored with just five seconds left.
Herbert currently leads the CAA in goals against average with a mark of 7.64 and ranks among the league leaders with a .605 save percentage.
