VILLANOVA, Pa. -- After suffering three straight heart-breaking losses, including two by just a single goal, the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team will look to get back on the winning track Saturday evening as the Blue Hens travel to Villanova for a 7 p.m. contest at Villanova Stadium.
The Blue Hens (1-3) will be trying to bounce back into the win column after falling to No. 18 ranked Bucknell 9-8 on Feb. 9, No. 1 ranked defending national champion Loyola on Feb. 16, and 15-12 to Mt. St. Mary’s last Saturday in Emmitsburg, Md.
Delaware picked up one of its signature victories last season against Villanova when the Blue Hens posted a 13-9 victory over the 8th-ranked Wildcats at Delaware Stadium, rallying from an early 6-0 deficit.
The Blue Hens, who have played all season without their top two defensive midfielders, Dom Sebastiani and Garrett Johnson, who are out with injuries, are led offensively by senior attackman Eric Smith (8 goals, 5 assists), senior Nick Diachenko (10 goals, 1 assist), and junior midfielder Connor McRoy (6 goals, 4 assists).
Sophomore Chris Herbert (10.22 goals against average, .522 save percentage) mans the nets while sophomore Tyler Barbarich (at right) is one of the national leaders in faceoff winning percentage (. 600).
Villanova enters the game still looking for its first win of the season after dropping verdicts of 11-9 to then No. 11 Lehigh and 12-10 to then No. 14 Drexel.
The Wildcats, members of the Big East Conference, are led offensively by Jack Rice (6 goals), Nick Doherty (3 goals), and Max Hart (3 goals). Thomas Croonquist has won 67 percent of his faceoffs.
