University of Delaware to Host Delaware Track & Field Open Saturday, Celebrate 100th Anniversary of Men’s Program

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware will host its lone outdoor track & field meet of the season tomorrow, Saturday, April 9, at the Delaware Mini-Stadium and at the same time will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Blue Hen men’s track and field.
The Delaware Open, which is expected to draw teams from Delaware State, Goldey Beacom, Wesley, Coppin State, Holy Family, Richard Stockton, Towson, and Stevens Tech as well as dozens of unattached athletes, will get underway at 10:30 a.m. with the men’s and women’s 10,000 meter run.
Field events will begin at 11 a.m. with the women’s pole vault, men’s long jump, men’s hammer, and men’s javelin competitions. Athletes will also be competing in the high jump, shot put, hammer, discus, and triple jump and running events including the 3,000 meter steeplechase, 4 x 100 meter relay, 1,500 meters, 100 and 110 meter high hurdles, 100 meters, 800 meters, 400 meter hurdles, 200 meters, 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters, and the 4 x 400 meter relay. The final event is scheduled to get underway at 4:30 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public and located at the Delaware Mini-Stadium directly behind Delaware Stadium.
Nearly 100 Delaware track & field alumni are expected back to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Blue Hen men’s track & field, which first competed during the 1911 season.
All pre-registered alumni in attendance will receive a concession voucher and a 100th anniversary commemorative T-shirt and the first 75 alumni who registere will receive a limited edition 2011 Delaware Track & Field schedule poster.
All giveaways will be distributed at the Delaware Open only, and Alumni must be in attendance to receive gifts. Advance registration is required. More information is available online at www.bluehens.com.
