RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware senior John Viotto (at right), who captured two events for the third time this season by capturing both the shot put and discus at the Delaware Outdoor Track & Field Open Saturday afternoon, has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced.
Viotto, a history education major with a minor in economics, helped the Blue Hens celebrate the 100th anniversary of the sport Saturday at the Delaware Mini-Stadium as Delaware dominated the action with seven first place finishes.
A native of Dayton, N.J. (South Brunswick High School), Viotto captured both the shot put and the discus competitions as he threw the shot a career-best 53-feet, 9 1/4-inches and added a winning performance in the discus with a throw of 154-feet, 10-inches.
Viotto, who won the award for the second time in his career, has posted the shot put-discus victory double three times this season. He also captured both events at the Golden Ram Invitational at West Chester and at the Penn Invitational. He has won 12 career outdoor meet titles despite missing all of last season with an injury.
Delaware will continue action this Saturday when the Hens travel to Richmond, Va. to compete at the Virginia Commonwealth University Invitational, the site of the CAA championships to be held May 6-7.
In addition to Viotto, Eric Jenkins of Northeastern was named the CAA Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, James Madison’s Alison Parris was selected as the Female Track Athlete of the Week, and Northeastern’s Althea Charles was picked as the Female Field Athlete of the Week.
