KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- University of Delaware senior Ross Shober (at right) put his name in the records book for the Blue Hen outdoor track & field squad Friday as he earned 5,959 total points and placed second in the decathlon at the Mondschein Multi-Meet at Kutztown (Pa.) University.

The native of Reinholds, Pa. (Garden Spot High School) competed for the second time in the event this season. He was leading after the first day of the Shamrock Invitational at Coastal Carolina University back in March before falling ill.

Shober’s overall point total of 5,959 bested his previous best of 5,645 set in 2010 and broke the previous school record of 5,943 established by Dave Freimuth back in 1990.

In addition to Shober, Delaware senior Joe Passalaqua also competed at Kutztown and placed fourth overall with a career-best score of 5,610 points.

Brady Wert of Slippery Rock won the event with a score of 6,176 followed by Shober, Slippery Rock’s Andrew Greenslade, Passalaqua, and Keystone College’s Andrew Todd in the 16-man field.

Shober took home first place in the 100 meters (10.94) and 200 meters (52.00) while placing second in the 110 meter hurdles (16.11) and the long jump (21-2 3/4), third place in the pole vault (13-1 1/2), and discus (101-8), and fourth in the shot put (34-6 1/4).

Passalaqua recorded second place finish in both the pole vault (13-5 1/4) and discus (103-9) while placing third in the shot put (36-9 1/2) and sixth in the 1,500 meters (4:59.92), 110m hurdles (17.62), and javelin (120-6).
