CONWAY, S.C. -- The University of Delaware men’s outdoor track and field squad opened its 2011 season at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina University on Thursday and Friday with three athletes competing.
Junior Jim Schwendtner (at right) was the Blue Hens’ top finisher with a third place showing in the hammer while junior Ryan Braunagel was ninth in the same event.
Delaware senior Ross Shober was leading the decathlon after Thursday’s action but did not compete on Friday’s second day due to a bout with food poisoning. Despite being on a UD record pace with 3,372 points, he could not finish and placed ninth in the event.
Schwendtner, the defending Colonial Athletic Association champion in the hammer, picked up where he left off as he posted a strong third place finish in the event on Friday with a career-best throw of 189-feet, good for No. 2 on the all-time UD list. Braunagel, who was fifth in the hammer at the 2010 CAA meet, posted a ninth place finish in the same event with a throw of 164-4.
Shober, who was fifth in the decathlon at the CAA meet last spring, posted an impressive performance on Thursday as he won the 100 meters (11.16), long jump (21-3 1/4), and 400 meters (50.87) while placing second in the shot put (35-6) and seventh in the high jump (5-7). He was set to compete in the 110 meter hurdles, discus, javelin, pole vault, and 1,500 meters on Friday before falling ill.
The complete Delaware team will open the season on Saturday, March 19, at the West Chester (Pa.) University Open.
