Seamon, Schwendtner Defend Titles to Lead Delaware at First Day of CAA Track & Field Championships

RICHMOND, Va. -- Jim Schwendtner (at right) and Jillian Seamon each defended their titles, the UD women set five school records, and seven University of Delaware runners advanced to Saturday’s finals in 10 events to highlight the first day of the 2011Colonial Athletic Association Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships Friday at SportsBackers Stadium hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Delaware men find themselves in fourth place in the team standings with 38 points while the Blue Hen women are in fifth with 20 points. Defending champion George Mason leads the men’s team standings with 62 points while Northeastern and three-time defending champion William & Mary are tied atop the women’s standings.
The second and final day of the two-day meet will get underway Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and run through the late afternoon.
Schwendtner captured the men’s hammer throw for the second straight year and posted his third career top two finish as he posted a throw of 188-1. Seamon won the women’s javelin title for the second straight year with a toss of 134-9.
Seven Blue Hens posted times in the preliminaries on Friday that qualified them for Saturday’s finals. Vicky Caruso posted the best time in the 400 meters (54.30) and was second in the 200 meters (23.75), Jessica Olsen was second in the 1,500 meters (4:51.46), Lindsay Prettyman was second in the 800 meters (2:14.64), Kayla Hennessy was third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:02.20), Nijah Dupiche ws fourth in the 400 meters (56.41), Kristi Cox was fifth in the 400 meters (57.00), Latoya James was sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (14.07), and Emily Gispert was eighth in the 800 meters (2:15.10).
For the Delaware men, Andrue Smith advanced to the finals of the 110 meter high hurdles with the fifth best time of 14.93 and to the championship of the 400 meter hurdles (55.51) while Joe Grieco posted the ninth best time in the 1,500 meters (3:59.69) to advance.

Also for the UD women, Jen Watunya finished fourth in the 10,000 meter finals with the fourth best time in UD history (36:23.87) and Courtney Sniscak was sixth in the hammer (161-10).
Also for the UD men, Andy Weaver was second in the finals of the 10,000 meters (14:27.68), 2010 runner-up and 2008 champion Connor Whitesel was third in the hammer (179-4), Joe Passalaqua was fourth in the pole vault (14-9), Ryan Braunagel finished fifth in the hammer (173-4), Kendall Poole was sixth in the long jump (22-6 1/4), and George Vallone was sixth in the pole vault (14-3 1/2). In addition, Ross Shober is currently in first place in the decathlon after winning the 100 meters (10.97), 400 meters (50.01), and long jump (23-0) after the first day of competition.
The Delaware women also broke five school and freshman records on the day as Caruso ran a time of 54.34 in the 400 meters, breaking the UD mark of 54.34 by Cristine Marquez last season; Prettyman broke her own school freshman record in the 800 meters; James set a new record in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.07, breaking the mark of 14.25 by current teammate Kayla Hennessy in 2008; Paige Morris broke the freshman record in the long jump with her leap of 18-9 3/4 breaking the mark of 18-0 set by Mandy Stille in 2004; and Courtney Sniscak broke her own freshman mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 161-10.
