Athlete photoRICHMOND, Va. – After scoring the game-winning goal that secured the University of Delaware men’s soccer team’s place in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament, senior forward Courtney Hewitt was named the league’s Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Hewitt (at right) was also tabbed the 5 & 10 National Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for November 8, 2010. He is the second-consecutive Blue Hen to earn both awards following netminder Brandon Paul earned the pair of honors last week.

Hewitt, who hails, Upper Marlboro, Md. (Archbishop Carroll) scored Delaware’s biggest goal of the season in the 70th minute of Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth University. The win locked the Blue Hens into the No. 4 seed at the CAA tournament where they will take on host William & Mary.

Senior Jon Scheer set up the game winner after sailing a ball to Hewitt on the right field. Hewitt used all 6-1 of his frame to get a head on the ball and found the top right corner.

Hewitt, a finance major with a minor in economics, bookended the regular season with goals, scoring the Hens’ first marker of the 2010 year in a 3-1 win over Canisius on Sept. 3 and did not find the back of the net until Sunday for the final tally of the regular season.

Delaware (6-8-3, 5-4-2) is heading to the postseason for the first time as a CAA team and makes its first appearance since the 1996 season when the Hens played in the America East Conference.

The Hens square off with the Tribe (13-3-2, 8-1-2) at 7:30 p.m.on Friday at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field in Williamsburg, Va.
