WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After earning its first-ever bid the Colonial Athletic Association tournament, the University of Delaware men’s soccer team earned four first-time all-conference selections. Senior Jon Scheer and junior Evans Frimpong earned second team honors while Darren O’Connor was named to the third team and Vincent Mediate made the All-Rookie squad. The teams were announced on Thursday at the conference’s annual banquet prior to the start of the CAA Tournament.
The four honorees are the most head coach Ian Hennessy, who concluded his fifth season with a 5-4-2 CAA record, has had selected to the all-conference team since inheriting the program in 2005. Prior to this season, Delaware had only had two players earn all-CAA honors since the Hens joined the league in 2002.
James Madison’s CJ Sapong was named the league’s Player of the Year, while also being named the conference’s Preseason Player of the Year. Shaun Foster of Hofstra was selected as both the Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year. William & Mary’s head man Chris Norris was tabbed the league’s Coach of the Year after guiding his squad to a No. 1 seed in the tournament.
Frimpong ripped off a team-high 54 shots this season, averaging nearly four attempts a game. The native Ghanaian made an impact in his first season with Delaware, tallying a team second-best seven points. Frimpong recorded three goals and one assist after transferring from NAIA power Texas-Brownsville. At then 25th-ranked James Madison on Oct. 9, Frimpong recorded a season-high three points, converting a penalty kick as well as assisting Scheer on the games final goal.
Scheer earns his first career CAA honors, landing on the second-team. He led the team in scoring with nine points on four goals and one assist. Scheer, a West Windsor, N.J. native (W. Windsor Plainsboro South), scored three of the team’s game-winning goals, all of which were in home conference games, helping Delaware stay undefeated and untied at home this season. Scheer found the back of the net for 1-0 wins over Old Dominion (Oct. 2), Drexel (Oct. 13) and Towson (Oct. 27). He also tallied the assist on Courtney Hewitt’s playoff clinching goal versus Virginia Commonwealth (Nov. 7).
O’Connor, a center back who also transferred to Delaware from Texas-Brownsville, helped the Hens record six shutouts this season, including the final three games of the season to seal Delaware’s berth in the post season. O’Connor, who hails from Cork, Ireland, chipped in on the offensive side of the pitch as well, scoring the opening goal in the Hens’ 2-2 tie with Rutgers (Sept. 10). While playing the middle, O’Connor and the backs helped limit the oppositions shots to just 228 on the season, only 102 of which were on goal.
Native to Southlake, Texas, freshman Vincent Mediate earned a spot on the CAA’s All-Rookie Team. He is the first player to earn a nod to the All-Rookie Team since Delaware became a member of the CAA. Mediate finished the regular season with three points, scoring once and dishing out one helper. His assist came in his first-ever game in the Blue and Gold, finding Hewitt on the Hens’ first goal of 2010 in a 3-1 win over Canisius. Late in the season, Mediate kept Delaware’s playoff hopes alive, scoring the game-winning goal over UNC Wilmington, the first victory in the program’s history over the Seahawks.
Delaware will continue its season in the semifinals of the CAA tournament. The Hens play No. 1 seeded William & Mary Friday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field in Williamsburg. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
