NEWARK, Del. -- Earning the award in back-to-back weeks, University of Delaware sophomore forward Roberto Giménez was named the Colonial Athletic Association men’s soccer Rookie of the Week Monday.
The Calle Calatrava, Spain native becomes the first back-to-back player in the conference to earn the weekly rookie honors this season.
Giménez (at right), who was also named PhillySoccerNews.com Player of the Week last Monday, picked up his fifth goal of the season Saturday night. The marker is the biggest of his career at Delaware, coming in the 89th minute to give the Hens a 1-0 win over CAA foe Georgia State.
The last-minute marker brought the over 500 people at Delaware Stadium to their feet as the Hens continued to control home field advantage, winning their seventh-straight home game in Colonial Athletic Association play. The seven-game run dates back to the 2009 season finale when Delaware knocked off the Panthers 4-1.
Ranked in the top three in every offensive category in the conference, Giménez sits in second in the CAA in points (14), tallying five goals and four assists. His goal against Georgia State was Delaware’s 18th of the year, tying the total for the 2010 season.
Having seen action in six of Delaware’s seven games this year, Giménez averages 2.33 points per game, good enough for second in the conference. He is in a three-way tie for total goals in the conference. One of the people Giménez is tied with is teammate and fellow forward Evans Frimpong. The Spaniard averages 0.83 goals per game, landing him in third in the league.
With a balanced offensive effort, Giménez’s four assists tie him for first in the league in total assists (4) and ranking him first in assists per game (0.67).
Behind the scoring efforts of Giménez, as well as the entire squad, Delaware remains the only unbeaten team in the conference, sitting at 6-0-1. The Hens are currently in second place in the league with the three points from Saturday night’s win.
Delaware, which is currently undefeated in its last 10 regular season game, heads to Norfolk, Va. to face Old Dominion University on Friday night. Game time against the Monarchs, who were ranked No. 15 in the Sept. 20 NSCAA rankings, is set for 7 p.m. at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium.
