KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- When the annual Major League Soccer Draft is held today, Jan. 12, a familiar name to University of Delaware men’s soccer fans might be heard.
Delaware senior forward Evans Frimpong (at right), who led the Blue Hens to a record-setting season this past fall, is among a talented group of collegiate players who could be selected.
The new-look MLS SuperDraft will be held at the Kansas City Convention Center in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention. A total of 38 players will be selected over two rounds. The first round will be broadcast live on ESPN2 starting at 12 noon ET. Draft information is also available at www.mlssoccer.com.
As in past expansion seasons, newcomers Montreal Impact will be selecting first overall. The following eight picks are currently held by clubs that did not qualify for the 2011 postseason, in reverse order of regular season finish. The remaining 10 picks will be determined by the order in which teams are eliminated in the playoffs combined with reverse order of regular-season finish. A four-round Supplemental Draft will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
Frimpong, a native of Ghana, led Delaware to its finest season in school history in 2011 under head coach Ian Hennessy. Delaware posted a record of 13-6-4, captured its first ever Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title, and moved on to the NCAA Tournament where the Hens knocked off national power Virginia 1-0 in the first round before falling to eventual national semifinalist UCLA 1-0 in the second round.
Among the honors Frimpong received during the season were second team National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American, first team NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region, Herrmann Trophy (National Player of the Year) final 15 semifinalist, and CAA Player of the Year. He ranked among the CAA leaders in scoring, tallying 29 points on 12 goals and five assists this season.
Frimpong took part in the 2012 adidas MLS Player Combine on Jan. 6-10 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
