NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men’s soccer team will host Big East Conference foe, the Seton Hall University Pirates, in a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 19 at 7 p.m. at Delaware Mini Stadium. The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 11, but was rescheduled to Wednesday due to weather concerns.
Delaware (2-4-1) looks to remain unbeaten since September 11, while Seton Hall (3-4) searches for its first road win of the season. The Blue Hens and Pirates have only played against each other once, a 3--3 OT tie last year.
“Its great to have Big East competition on campus,” Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy remarked about UD’s home match against Seton Hall. “Like the Colonial Athletic Association, the Big East Conference is regarded as one of the best conferences in the country and last year we sent 10 teams to the NCAA Tournament combined.”
Seton Hall University, members of the Big East Conference, are led by first-year head coach and former Big East Player of the Year, Gerson Echevery, that returns 20 letterwinners and seven starters from a squad that posted a 5-11-2 mark during the 2011 campaign.
The Pirates have junior forward, Max Garcia, who returns as the teams leading scorer with 11 points and have nine points through seven games this year. Over the past five matches SHU owns a 2-3 record and have an 0-1 record on the road this year.
The Blue Hens went 1-0-1 last week and look to build on the recent success with their second match against a Big East Conference opponent this year. Following his first collegiate goal on Sept. 11 versus Navy, sophomore striker, Kyle Bruno, leads the Blue hens with three points on the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jay Lupas (at right) registered his first career shutout in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Columbia.
“We are unbeaten in the last two games and look forward to a continued consistency as the start of conference play is about to begin,” Hennessy added.
The Blue Hens men’s soccer team will have the rest of the week off and return to the field on Tuesday, September 25 at 7 p.m. when Delaware plays a road match against the Lafayette Leopards at 7 p.m..
