SOMERS, Wis. - - The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swim teams are in the middle of a holiday rest, but remain in the national scene as the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released their latest CSCAA/CollegeSwimming.com Mid Major Division I poll on Monday.

The Mid-Major rankings use an objective point system to compare teams’ relative strength in a traditional dual meet lineup as submitted by participating teams. The ranking is available to those institutions that are not members of a BCS conference or Mountain West Conference, or provide less than one-half of the allowable scholarships under the NCAA rules. Teams must have submitted entries within the first two polling periods to be eligible for the final ranking.

The men, 6-1 in dual meets this season (3-1 Colonial Athletic Association), remain in the top 25, dropping to 18 with 213.4 points. They fell eight spots after being ranked ninth in the first poll released earlier this season.

The women fell out of the top 25, but still received 220.3 points, only 2.6 points behind New Hampshire and the 25th spot. The Blue Hens (6-2, 3-2 CAA) were ranked 24th in the original poll released November 18.

Both squads have not performed since the Frank Elm Invitational, hosted by Rutgers University November 19-21. Both teams had an outstanding showing in front of a number of other schools, as the men placed second out of eight teams and the women finished seventh out of 15 schools.

The men were led by their relay teams, earning two second place finishes and three third place finishes on their way to earning 1668 points, only 41.5 points behind La Salle for the team title. The Blue Hens claimed a second place finish in the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays as well as third place finishes in the 800-yard freestyle relay and both the 200 and 400-yard medley relay races.

Stephanie Dodd led the women swimmers with two second-place finishes, leading the team to 969 points. The junior swam the team’s season best, 16:58.20, in the 1650-yard freestyle event, placing second. She also touched home in second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:25.32, also the team’s top time for the season. Dodd added a 17th place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 1:54.01, another top time for the season.

Head coach John Hayman will take his teams to Florida over the semester break for a training session and competition on January 2. The Blue Hens will return to dual meet action on January 8, as they travel to Towson for a CAA matchup. The opening gun is scheduled to sound at 1 p.m.

Future release dates for the CSCAA/CollegeSwimming.com Mid Major Division I poll are scheduled for January 12, February 9 and March 9.
