Blue Hen Swim Squads Ranked in First Mid-Major Poll, Head to Rutgers This Weekend

SOMERS, Wis. - - The first College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA)/CollegeSwimming.com Mid Major Division I Swimming Poll was released Thursday and the University of Delaware men’s and women’s teams are both represented.

The Delaware men (6-1, 3-1 CAA) were placed ninth in the opening poll with 212 points while the women (6-2, 3-2 CAA) were 24th with 217.2 points.

Both Blue Hen squads are coming off convincing victories over La Salle and Rider last weekend at Rawstrom Natatorium. The men defeated La Salle and Rider by scores of 169-130 and 208-91, respectively. The women had similar results, defeating La Salle 213-84 and Rider 186-101.

Ryan Roberts led the way for the men’s team posting four first-place finishes. He won the 200 and the 500-yard freestyle races as well as the 200-yard backstroke. Additionally, he was the opening leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that took first place in 3:06.72.

Hannah Facchine ended the day with four first-place finishes for the women winning the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events as well as the 200-yard individual medley. She was also the second leg of the 200-yard medley relay team that touched home before any other team in 1:46.96.

Navy, Columbia, Denver, Western Kentucky, and Cleveland state round out the top five in the men’s team rankings as CAA foe Towson tops the list with 234.8 points for the women. Miami-Ohio, Princeton, Western Kentucky and San Jose State round out the top five for the women’s team rankings.

This weekend, both squads head to Piscataway, N.J. to take part in the Frank Elm Invitational, starting today and continuing through Sunday. The Blue Hens will be accompanied by 15 other teams across the Mid-Atlantic region. In addition to the host Rutgers, the Blue Hens will be swimming against Pittsburgh, Central Connecticut, Columbia, Fordham, La Salle, Sacred Heart, Wagner, The College of New Jersey, Bucknell and Saint Francis. Yale, Colgate, Boston University and Drexel will bring their diving squads to the competition.
