Delaware Swimmers Outdual La Salle and Rider to Sweep Non-League Tri-Meet

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept the competition in a non-conference tri-meet against host La Salle and Rider at Kirk Pool on Saturday afternoon.
The Delaware men (3-3) took down host La Salle, 162.5-137.5 and Rider, 175.5-124.5, to snap three a three-game losing streak after opening the 2011-12 season with a dual-meet victory.
The Delaware women (4-2) also defeated both squads, besting La Salle168-130 and Rider, 184.5.-95.5, to get back to their winning ways.
Hannah Facchine capped off a spectacular meet for the Blue Hen women, winning all four of her events. She swam to a first place finish in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke races as well as the 200-yard IM. Facchine’s time of 1:05.30 in the 100-yard breaststroke was a season’s best.
She also swam the breaststroke leg of the first-place 200-yard medley relay, along with Courtney Raw, Tori Gillespie, and Maggie Tracy, also topping their best time of the season.
Raw and Gillespie also had successful meets for the Blue Hens. Raw won both backstroke events, swimming the 100-yard race in 58.94, and the 200 event in 2:07.57. Gillespie won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.11, and placed third in the 50-yard freestyle. She also was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay that came in first, along with Jena Marrinucci, Brittany Lazear, and Tracy.
In the diving events, Heather Chucta placed second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
On the men’s side, three swimmers posted first place finishes. Matt Marquez took the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:02.44 and also finished in the top three for the 100-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle.
After coming in second to Rider’s Brian Molloy in the 200-yard freestyle, Ryan Roberts finished ahead of the field in the 200-yard backstroke in, touching home in 1:53.55.
Andrew Speese (at right) also won the 200-yard butterfly in a new season low of 1:54.74. Nick Woomer, Josh Hyman, Zachary Lowe and Seth Bergman also finished second in their respective events.
In addition, the Hens’ relay teams placed second in both the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle events.
The Blue Hens return to action when they head to the Bucknell Invitational next weekend from Nov. 18-20.
