Hyman, Roberts, Woomer Lead Way as Delaware Dunks Widener in Home Finale

Athlete photoNEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams closed out the home portion of the schedule Wednesday night as both Blue Hen teams won every race and cruised to a sweep over visiting Widener University at Rawstrom Natatorium.

The Delaware men won 197-51 and improved to 5-3 with their fourth straight win while the Blue Hen women posted a 194-64 victory and improved to 6-3. The Widener men fell to 1-7 while the Pioneer women dropped to 2-5 on the season.

For the Delaware men, Ryan Roberts and Josh Hyman (at right) each won four events as they teamed to win the 200 medley relay (1:35.46) and 400 freestyle relay (3:12.30) with Roberts also claiming titles in the 100 backstroke (51.13) and 500 freestyle (5:06.82) and Hyman, swimming in his final home meet for UD, taking the 200 breaststroke (2:09.59) and 200 individual medley (1:57.11).

Senior Nick Woomer won three events, taking the 200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay, and 50 freestyle (21.12), while Matthew Marquez won both the 200 butterfly (2:05.12) and 200 backstroke (1:53.93) competitions.

On the women’s side, Courtney Raw, Laura Askin, and senior Hannah Facchine each won three events while Megan Northshield captured two events.

Raw teamed to win the 200 medley relay (1:50.13) and also captured the 100 backstroke (59.57) and 100 butterfly (59.24); Askin won the 100 freestyle (54.35), 200 freestyle (1:55.00), and 400 freestyle relay (3:37.16); Facchine won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.07), 200 breaststroke (2:23.14), and 400 freestyle relay; and Northshield captured both the 200 butterfly (2:05.12) and 500 freestyle (5:06.82).

Both Delaware teams will return to action this Saturday, Jan. 28, when the Blue Hens travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary for their final dual meets of the season. The Hens will then gear up for the CAA Championships to be held Feb. 22-25 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
