McLaughlin, Kolwyck Each Win Twice to Lead Delaware Swimmers at Bucknell Bison Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Justin Kolwyck (at right) and senior Kyle McLaughlin each won two events for the men and sophomore Brittany Lazear and freshman Haley Novak captured first place finishes for the women to lead the University of Delaware as the Blue Hens closed out the 2012-13 regular season finale at the Bison Invite Saturday afternoon at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.
The Blue Hens battled American, Army, Lafayette, Navy, James Madison, Seton Hall, Shippensburg and host Bucknell in the nine-school invitational that was an unscored meet.
Kolwyck won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:35.90 and then added a second title, winning the 1,650 freestyle event in a time of 16:00.86, the third best time in school history. He also posted a seventh place showing in the 100 butterfly (52.77).
McLaughlin was also a double winner for Delaware as he captured the 100 freestyle (46.38) and 200 freestyle (1:42.44) events while also placing third in the 500 freestyle (4:39.17) and fifth in the 50 freestyle (21.71).
Lazear and Novak led the UD women as Lazear captured the 200 freestyle in 1:55.80 while also placing second in 100 freestyle (53.42) and the 500 freestyle (5:04.61). Novak captured the 200 individual medley in 2:11.95 and also added a third place in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.38) and a sixth place showing in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.63).
Also for the UD men, Bryan Brown was second in the 200 backstroke (1:55.28), third in the 100 backstroke (52.37), and 10th in the 100 freestyle (47.88) while Lucas Kuriga was third in the 200 freestyle (1:45.39), seventh in the 500 freestyle (4:46.52), and eighth in the 100 freestyle (47.41); Ryan Cutler was third in the 100 butterfly (1:56.71), sixth in the 500 freestyle (4:45.27), and eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:45.39); Ben Evangelista was third in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.84), fifth in the 100 breaststroke (58.97), and sixth in the 200 (1:57.95); and Peter DeLuce was fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.32), fifth in the 200 IM (1:57.66), and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (59.31).
Also for the UD women, Joanna Baird was second in the 1,650 freestyle (17:41.44), fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:06.74), and eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.60) while Jamie Kane was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.06), fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.09), and ninth in the 200 individual medley (2:16.62).
The Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will compete in the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships from February 27 through March 2, in Fairfax, Virginia on the campus of George Mason University.
