Roberts, Tooley Set New Delaware Records at Day Two of CAA Swimming & Diving Championships

Athlete photoFAIRFAX Va. –Ryan Roberts (at right), Alex Tooley, (at left) and Morgan Whyte set new University of Delaware records in day two of the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships Thursday night at George Mason’s Jim McKay Natatorium.

Roberts shattered his 2010-11 record in the 500 freestyle by almost three seconds with a time of 4:27.92 that gave the senior a third-place finish in the CAA Finals. 

In the preliminaries of the 200 individual medley, Tooley posted a time of 1:50.77, setting a new UD record that was previously held by Josh Hyman in 2010-11.  Tooley would place Whyte swam a time of 23.06 for a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle, breaking teammate Courtney Raw’s record of 23.58, set last season.

After the second day of competition, UNCW leads the men with 242 points followed by George Mason (231) and William & Mary (203).  Delaware and Towson are tied for fourth with 142 points as Drexel completes the field with 123 points.

On the women’s side, Towson leads after the second day with 275 points.  James Madison is second with 269.5 points followed by William & Mary (191.5) and UNCW (151). Delaware sits in fifth place with 115 points as Northeastern (105), Drexel (88) and George Mason (62) round out the field.Athlete photo

The 200 freestyle relay team of Matthew McCarthy, Cole Clark, Michael Moore and Sihan Liu posted a seventh-place finish with a time of 1:24.18.  McCarthy also finished 13th in the 200 IM (1:52.09).  Timothy West added a 15th place showing in the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.70.

Brian Coonce earned a sixth-place finish in the 1 meter diving competition with a score of 273.85 as fellow divers, Luke Winkler (277.75) and Patrick McCann (195.65) finish ninth and 14th respectively.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Domonique Montoya, Courtney Raw, MaryKay Harris and Whyte earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:33.54.  Harris added 15th-place showing in the 50 freestyle (23.99).

The Blue Hens will return to the water tomorrow for day three of the championship. Scheduled events in the pool include the men's and women's 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 400 medley relay in addition to the women’s 1 mtr diving competition.
