Seniors Shine as Blue Hen Men Defeat Towson, 220-78, in CAA Dual Meet on Senior Day

Athlete photoNEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware men’s & women’s swimming and diving seniors combined for eight first place finishes as the Blue Hens split a Colonial Athletic Association dual against rival Towson on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Harry Rawstorm Natatorium.

The Blue Hen men (6-3, 2-3 CAA) defeated Towson (3-6, 0-5 CAA), 220-78, while the Delaware women (8-3, 5-3 CAA) fell to the Tigers (10-0, 6-0 CAA), 205-95.

During the meet, the Blue Hens honored 12 seniors, Brian Coonce, Matt McCarthy (at right), Kyle McLaughlin, Michael Moore, Ryan Roberts, Andrew Speese, Tyler Szarko, Allie Brown, MaryKathryn Harris, Mackenzie Howarth, Lesley Payonk and Courtney Raw in pool-side ceremony with their family members.

UD men seniors earned first place finishes with the 400 freestyle relay team of McCarthy, Moore, McLaughlin and Roberts (3:09.94), Coonce in the 1-meter diving event (286.72), McCarthy in 100 backstroke (51.33) and 200 backstroke (1:51.06), McLaughlin in the 200 freestyle (1:44.15) and Roberts in the 1,000 freestyle (9:33.74) and the 500 freestyle (4:39.99).

Other UD men’s swimmers posting victories were the 200 medley relay (Tim Ware, Clayton Clemens, Cole Clark, Paul Gallagher), 1:34.62, Clemens in the100 breaststroke (59.54) and 200 breaststroke (2:10.14), Gallagher in the 50 freestyle (21.34) and 100 freestyle (46.42), Alex Tooley in the 400 individual medley (4:05.93), and Luke Winkler in the 3-meter diving (302.02).

In defeat, the Blue Hen women seniors contributed in wins with the 200 medley relay team of Raw, Dominique Montoya, Harris and Morgan Whyte (1:45.99) taking first place.

Raw added a win in the 100 backstroke (57.88). Montoya added two individual wins in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.25) and 100 freestyle (53.14) while Whyte added a win in the 50 freestyle (23.96) for Delaware.

Delaware’s men’s diving team swept the 1-meter and 3-meter events with victories by Coonce and Winkler. Coonce also took a second place finish in the 3-meter event (270.45). Caitlin Stockwell earned a second place finish in the 3-meter event (265.80) and a third place nod in the 1-meter event (268.05) while Kristina Congdon added a third place finish in the 3-meter event (263.85).

Over the weekend, Congdon, Winkler and Stockwell qualified for the NCAA Zone “A” Meet that will be held from March 15-17 at Virginia Tech.

Both Delaware teams will have a five-week break to train for the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships that will be held from Feb. 27 through Mar. 2, in Fairfax, Va. on the campus of George Mason University.
