Hens Push #63 UPenn to Four Three Setters, But Quakers Prevail 5-2

NEWARK, Del. - - Facing the 63rd-ranked team in the country, the University of Delaware men’s tennis team pushed the University of Pennsylvania into four singles matches that needed three sets. But in the end, the Quakers prevailed 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
Conditions at the Delaware Field House Tennis courts were blustery, with winds gusting upwards of 25 miles per hour during the nonconference action.
Troy Beneck (at right) and Ryan Kent were the lone point winners for the Blue Hens, who slip to 6-6 on the season.
Beneck needed just two sets to defeat Phil Law 6-3, 6-2 in the second flight. Kent dropped his first set 6-1 to Dmitry Bury in the sixth flight, but won the second 6-2 and the third 6-1.
Beneck partnered up with Andre Vorobyov to win the first flight of doubles 8-6 over Hicham Laalej and Zach Katz. The first flight was the first doubles match completed, but the Quakers picked up the point.
Courtney Scott and Chris Hincker fell in the second flight to Nikola Kocovic and Mark Milbrandt, but forced a tiebreaker. The Quaker partnership won 9-8 (8).
The third flight was the final doubles match to finish, pitting Delaware’s Kent and Robbie Kay against Bury and Zach Gorn. Penn’s pair needed an extra point to secure the doubles point with a 9-7 victory.
Vorobyov pushed his third-flight singles match to two tiebreakers and an extra set before falling to Kocovic 6-7(3), 6-7(4), 0-6.
In the fourth flight, Hincker also went three sets against Jason Lin, who took the point 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Jeff Marshall too went three sets in the fifth flight, falling to Katz 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Delaware returns to Colonial Athletic Association action on Friday when it hosts Drexel University. Match time is slated for noon at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts.
