NEWARK, Del. -- The doubles team of sophomores Robbie Kay and Ryan Kent tied the University of Delaware men’s tennis single season doubles victory mark on Sunday afternoon, winning their 18th match this season.
The win was part of a successful day as both the Blue Hen men's and women's teams swept the visiting Patriots of George Mason at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts.
The Delaware men improved to 7-6 overall (2-3 Colonial Athletic Association) while Mason slipped to 10-8. The Hens posted their 13th straight win over George Mason, improving to 13-1 all-time in the series.
Kent (at right) and Kay improved to 18-8 on the season with an 8-7 (5) win over Taylor Sargent and Steven Hyre in the third flight. The Blue Hen pair tied a 37-year old record set by Jeff Duminsky and Jeff Olmstead from 1973-74.
Kent and Kay will go for the outright record on April 12 when the Hens travel to Mt. St. Mary's.
The Blue Hens swept the doubles action as Troy Beneck and Andre Vorobyov got by Jorge Osuna and Jordan Borsanyi 8-3 in the first flight. In the second flight, Courtney Scott and Chris Hincker completed the sweep with an 8-5 win over Kevin McMillen and Christopher Borden.
In singles action, both Scott and Jeff Marshall picked up wins after their Mason counterparts retired. Scott won his first set 6-0 before Osuna bowed out in the first flight. Marshall won his first set 6-3 and was leading 2-0 in the fifth flight before Borsanyi retired.
Beneck logged his 14th career win and 12th in the second flight, winning 6-2, 6-2 over McMillen. Vorobyov won the third flight by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
Two Blue Hens went to three sets in singles. Hincker picked up the first set of the fourth flight 7-6 (6) over Sargent, but the Patriot rallied back to earn the point, winning the second set 6-1 and tiebreaker 10-7. Kent dropped his first set 2-6, but won the second 6-2 against Hyre. Kent and Hyre battled in the tiebreaker, but in the end Hyre won 10-6.
