NORFOLK, Va. – It’s been 10 years since the University of Delaware joined the Colonial Athletic Association in 2001-02. In each of those seasons, the Blue Hen men’s tennis team has advanced to the league’s quarterfinals.
And 2010-11 would be no different as seventh-seeded Delaware knocked off No. 10 Hofstra University 4-0 Thursday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.
Delaware (9-6 overall) will take on second-seeded Georgia State Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Tournament. All action will take place at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
Hofstra (4-10 overall) looked to steal the doubles points, as third-flighters Jon Disley and Ben Thompson-Star knocked off Ryan Kent and Robby Kay 8-5.
But the Hens answered back as Courtney Scott (at right) and Chris Hincker were the second doubles pair to finish with an 8-3 win over Antonio Pena and Matt Gemmell in the second flight.
Delaware grabbed up a 1-0 advantage as the first flight wrapped up with Troy Beneck and Andre Vorobyov coming out with an 8-4 victory over Chris Damion and Adrien Bailly.
The fifth flight of singles was the first to conclude as Delaware’s Jeff Marshall cruised past Gemmell 6-2, 6-1. Beneck’s second flight match was the next to finish as he dominated Damion 6-2, 6-0.
A junior and playing in his third CAA tournament, Scott locked up the Blue Hen victory with a first flight win, defeating Pena 6-1, 6-2.
Beneck was in a close battle with Thompson-Star in the third flight. The Blue Hen fell in the first set 4-6, and was hanging tough in the second set, down just 3-4 before the match was decided.
Hincker was tied in his fourth flight match against Disley 1-1, winning the first set 6-1. Disley took the second set 7-5. Kent fell behind in the first set of his sixth flight match up with Bailly 4-6, but was leading the second flight 5-4.
