ELKTON, Md. –– The University of Delaware men’s tennis team picked up right where it left off in the fall, cruising to a 7-0 victory over Villanova University Saturday evening at the Elkon Indoor Tennis Courts.
The sophomore pair of Robbie Kay and Ryan Kent picked up another doubles win and improved to 15-1 as a tandem, just three wins shy of tying the school record for doubles wins in a season. Jeff Dumansky and Jeff Olmstead hold the mark of 18-3 set during the 1973-74 season.
The pair also sealed the doubles point for the Blue Hens, who improved to 2-0 this season. In the first doubles flight, Courtney Scott and Chris Hincker battled tough but fell to Thomas O’Brien and Trenton Alenik 9-8 (7-4). In the second flight, Troy Beneck and Andre Vorobyov picked up an 8-4 win over David Shaheen and John Drosick.
“We fought through some adversity in doubles,” said Delaware head coach Laura Travis. “The doubles point came down to the third court (Kent/Kay). We had lost the momentum but held true to basic principles and managed to pull out the win and the point.”
In the singles action, Scott picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win in the first flight over Shaheen while the No. 2 spot saw Beneck cruise to a 6-2, 6-1 over O’Brien.
Vorobyov picked up a nail-biting win at the third flight, needing extra frames to do so. He picked up an easy 6-1 win in the first set but his opponent, Alenik, won the second set 7-6 (7-2). In the end, Vorobyov won the point for Delaware, 10-3 in the tiebreaker.
Flight four featured Hincker moving a little closer to the top of the books as well, improving his career record to 65-25 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Ryan Peyton. Hincker is now just five wins short of the all-time mark of 70-38 set by Austin Longacre last season.
Jeff Marshall picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the fifth flight over Matt Colonnese for the Hens while Kent nearly swept Liam Bohonnon, winning 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.
Delaware resumes action on Feb. 26 when the Blue Hens head to the University of Pennsylvania.
