BETHLEHEM, Pa. - For the first time since the 2005-06 season, the University of Delaware men’s tennis team opened its season 3-0, knocking off the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh University 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
The win gave Delaware the edge in the all-time series, putting the Hens up 18-17. The victory at the Lewis Tennis Center was all the third consecutive Delaware win over the Mountain Hawks (7-2), while also snapping a six-game Lehigh winning streak.
Delaware has now won four straight matches, dating back to the 2009-10 season finale, 6-1 over Johns Hopkins University.
In the doubles action, Courtney Scott and Chris Hicker of Delaware picked up an 8-6 first-flight victory over Troy List and Collin Laffey. Troy Beneck and Andre Vorobyov earned an 8-1 win to give Delaware the doubles point.
In the third flight, the Delaware duo of Ryan Kent (above, at right) and Robbie Kay were slowed down, falling in a tight 8-7 (2) match against Arnaldo Pacheco and Mark Goldberg.
Kent and Kay are now 15-2 as a doubles pair, just three wins short of the single-season doubles win mark of 18, set by Jeff Dumansky and Jeff Olmstead in 1973-74.
The Hens got four singles victories against the Hawks, including a nail biter in the third flight, where Vorobyov picked up a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Matt Savran.
Troy Beneck improved his season record to 7-3, including 5-0 in the second flight, after cruising past Laffey 6-1, 6-2.
In the fifth and sixth flights, Jeff Marshall and Kent posted nearly identical scores. Marshall, playing in the fifth flight, won 6-4, 6-3 over Lehigh’s Ryan Krueger, while Kent picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win against Andrew Krentz.
Delaware returns to the courts this weekend when the Hens head to Annapolis, Md. to face the Midshipmen of the US Naval Academy (9-5). The match is set to begin at noon at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
