Navy Halts Undefeated Blue Hens 4-3, Four Matches Go To Extra Sets

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The University of Delaware men’s tennis team battled hard against the Naval Academy on Saturday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. But in the end, Delaware suffered its first loss of the 2010-11 season, falling 4-3 to the Midshipmen.
Navy improved to 5-0 all-time against Delaware. But the series is closer than the overall record might seem, as the Mids have won the last three meetings 4-3.
In doubles action, the Mids (10-5) picked up the point as Nick Birger and Owen Bullard got an 8-6 win over Courtney Scott (at right) and Chris Hincker in the first flight, while Hewward Drayton and Jeremy New combined to win the fourth flight 8-4 over Robbie Kay and Ryan Kent.
Troy Beneck and Andrew Vorobyov picked up an 8-1 doubles win the second flight over Nicolas Gutsche and Zach Nicholson.
The Hens, who fall to 3-1 on the season, picked up three wins in the singles matches.
Scott cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 first flight win over Bullard, while Vorobyov won his third flight match 6-3, 6-3 against Nicholson. Jeff Marshall had the final win for Delaware, needing an extra set against Gutsche. Marshall took the point 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Delaware’s three losses in the singles action were close, requiring extra sets to determine a winner. Beneck fell in the second flight 4-6, 6-3, 1-6 to Marcus Rebersak, while Hincker was edged out 4-6, 6-3, 3-6 by New. Kent fell in the sixth flight 7-6(8-6), 4-6, 4-6 to Drayton.
The Blue Hens return to action March 12 when they travel to Connecticut to take on the Stags of Fairfield University. Match time is set for 5 p.m. at the Walsh Tennis Courts.
