PHILADELPHIA --After a stellar freshman season, Troy Beneck picked up right where he left off in the spring, reaching the finals of the Saint Joseph’s Invitational this weekend.
Due to weather constraints, the singles flights were played to the finals. Select doubles matches were played following the conclusion of singles play. With the limited number of doubles matches played, the double draws were played without brackets.
Beneck (at right), a Wilmington, Del. native, reached the finals of the Flight One singles bracket, never dropping more than two games in a set. He kicked off the weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Chas Berenato of La Salle University and followed up with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Tommy Gates of the host school, Saint Joseph’s, to reach the semifinals.
Beneck capped his weekend at Finnessy Courts with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ryan Petyon, who won three matches as Villanova’s representative in the No. 1 singles. Had the finals been played, Beneck would have squared off with Temple University’s Kacper Rams.
