Delaware Tennis Teams Split Matches with Lehigh; Men Drop Tough 4-3 Verdict to Mountain Hawks

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams split a pair of matches Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hen women posted a 7-0 shutout over host Lehigh and the UD men dropped a tough 4-3 verdict in competition held at Lehigh’s Lewis Center.
The Delaware women (1-0), who were playing their first dual meet of the season and competing for the first time since November, won all six singles matches in straight sets and swept the three doubles matches to hand Lehigh (1-4) its fourth loss in five outings.
On the men’s side, Delaware fell to 0-2 as the Hens lost their second straight 4-3 match this spring. Lehigh (4-1) won its fourth straight match.
Picking up singles victories for the UD women were Dorothy Safron at No. 1, Courtney Fenimore at No. 2, Samantha Carnall at No. 3, Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom at No. 4, Olivia Helm at No. 5, and Amanda Halstrom at No. 6. Delaware’s doubles teams of Carnall and Sjoberg-Sundstrom at No. 1, Safron and Fenimore at No. 2, and Heim and Halstrom at No. 3 were also victorious.
In the men’s section, Delaware earned the doubles point by taking two out of three matches but could manage to capture just two singles matches and fell by one-point.
Picking up victories for Delaware were Troy Beneck at No. 1 singles, Andre Vorobyov (at right) at No. 3 singles, Vorobyov and Ryan Kent at No. 2 doubles, and Nolan Gelman and Evan Andrews at No. 3 doubles.
Both Delaware teams will return to action this week when the Blue Hens take on Morgan State at the Sea Colony Indoor Courts in Bethany Beach, Del.
