BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Delaware men’s tennis team opened with winning the doubles point, but fell short in singles matches as Lehigh picked up a 4-3 victory Sunday inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
“We competed well this afternoon and we gave ourselves a chance, but Lehigh edged us out in the end,” UD head coach Laura Travis remarked. “This was a highly competitive match against a strong Lehigh team.”
Delaware (1-1) won the doubles point after winning two of the three matches over Lehigh (3-1). The Blue Hens’ top team of juniors Troy Beneck and Adam Lawton downed Goldberg/Petersen, 8-4, while junior Nolan Gelman (at top right) and sophomore Evan Andrews picked up an 8-3 victory over Savran/Kochman.
In singles play, Beneck won the No. 1 point with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victory against Ben Gilman. In the No. 3 spot, Gelman also won his point as he downed Matt Savran, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
In total, three of the top four flights needed three sets before a winner was decided.
Delaware returns home as they host St. Joseph’s this Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Elkton Indoor Courts.
