athlete photoELKTON, Md. – For the second straight week, the University of Delaware men’s tennis team put up a tough fight but Saint Joseph’s University came from behind to take a 4-3 win over the Blue Hens Saturday evening at the Elkton Indoor Courts.

Delaware’s top doubles teams each picked up victories to give the Blue Hens (1-2) a team point.  Troy Beneck and Adam Lawton (at right) defeated the duo of Max Montague and Jose Sierra by a close score of 8-6.

The match between Delaware’s Evan Andrews and Nolan Gelman and the Hawks’ Dan Barrus and Tommy Gates wasn’t as close as the Blue Hens picked up the 8-3 win.

In singles play, Beneck and Lawton grabbed two more wins over Saint Joseph’s (2-2) in the top two flights.  Beneck defeated Alex Veronis, 6-3, 6-1 while Lawton picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gates.

The Blue Hens host another off-campus match next Sunday at 4 p.m. against Villanova at DuPont Country Club in Wilmington.
