ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Delaware men’s tennis team struggled to find its way Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens fell to Navy, 7-0, at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
“This was a great opportunity for us, but Navy is always so tough, especially indoors,” stated Delaware head coach Laura Travis. “We’re still seeing individual progress, but now we just need to sustain that for longer periods of time.”
In doubles play, the Blue Hens (2-2) opened with losses of 8-1 and 8-3. In the no. 1 spot, Evan Andrews and Nolan Gelman took the Navy (8-6) pair of Calvin Mark and Peter McDonald to a final score of 8-7 (9-7).
Freshman Alex Sweet began singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Alex Gaines in the sixth flight while Andrews followed with the same score to Blake Daniel in the No. 4 slot.
In No. 2 singles, Gelman fell by a mark of 6-2, 6-3 to McDonald. In the next match, Jason Derene put up a fight, but lost, 7-5, 6-2, to Nicholas Gutsche in the No. 5 spot.
In the top flight, Mark defeated Lawton, 6-4, 6-3.
In the final match of the afternoon, freshman Mike Furr (at top right) battled Austin Jones until the end but came up short in the 7-6 (5), 7-3 loss.
The team’s usual top flight competitor junior Troy Beneck was out of the lineup Sunday to due illness.
Delaware returns to the court next Sunday as the Hens travel to UMBC for a 12 noon match.
