ELKTON, Md. – The University of Delaware men’s tennis team kicked off Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday evening with a 5-2 loss to James Madison University at the Elkton Indoor Tennis Club.
“Today we saw a solid overall physical and mental showing from everyone,” said Delaware head coach Laura Travis. “We are making progress, but disciplined practices and keeping a healthy perspective on what is actually happening in matches will be the fundamental keys to continued improvement.”
Nolan Gelman and Evan Andrews paired up for UD’s lone doubles victory with an 8-5 win over JMU’s Hugo Ramadier and Greg Vladimirsky to improve to 6-2 in the No. 2 flight.
Down 0-2 on the night, Adam Lawton picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win for Delaware (2-5; 0-1 CAA) in No. 2 singles over Vladimirsky. Lawton moved to 9-2 in the second flight this season and is 19-5 in overall play.
The Dukes (4-6; 2-0 CAA) sealed the victory with three straight singles wins to take the 5-1 advantage.
Jason Derene (at top right) wrapped up play for the Blue Hens with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-3 win against Maxi Branth in the No. 6 spot. The victory was the first for Derene in the flight this season.
