Second Varsity Eights Crew Places Second to Lead University of Delaware Rowers at Knecht Cup

athlete photoCAMDEN, N.J. -- The Blue Hen Second Varsity Eights crew posted a second place finish and the University of Delaware rowing squad posted two other top 10 finishes to cap action at the two-day Knecht Cup Sunday on the Cooper River.

Delaware’s Second Varsity Eights team of coxswain Marra Green, Julia Cagney, Tori Drach, Holly Dodge, Ally Crossman, Bethany Callaway, Kristen Endres, Virginia Hall, and Alex Smart won its heat and placed first in the semifinals on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s final where the squad placed second behind champion Wisconsin.

Delaware’s time of 6:57.69 was just .11 seconds off the Badgers’ winning time of 6:57.58. Massachusetts was third in the race followed by Buffalo, Connecticut, and Duke.

The Blue Hens also had two other top 10 finishes as the Varsity Fours crew placed ninth and the Novice Eights team finished 10th. Also for Delaware, the Varsity Eights crew placed 17th overall while the Second Varsity Fours and the Novice Fours boats finished fourth and sixth respectively in their heats and did not advance further.

The Varsity Fours squad of Valerie Glace, Leanna Colubriale, Laura Wertman, Sarah Baillie, and coxswain Dianna Levin placed third in the heat and third in the semifinals on Saturday and posted a second place finish in the petite (consolation) finals Sunday for an overall ninth place finish. Robert Morris won the petite final with a time of 8:21.90, edging the Hens, who rowed to a time of 8:26.92.

In the Novice Eights race, Delaware’s group of Sarah Slotoroff, Alexis Blandine, Bethany Porter, Jenny Kohler, Rachel Boudart, Ivy Drexel, Angela Quinn, Meredith Murphy, and coxswain Maria Gallo earned a 10th place finish overall. The team placed second in its heat and fourth in the semifinals on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s petite final where it finished fourth with a time of 7:43.38. Duke won the petite final in 7:23.95 followed by Drexel, Connecticut, Delaware, Buffalo, and Boston College.

In the Varsity Eights competition, Delaware finished fourth in its heat and sixth in the semifinals on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s third final. The team of Meredith Rubin, Darra Finnerty, Ashley Maguire, Rachael Conway, Courtney Williams, Lauren Kolsky, Lauren Kanaskie, Stephanie Lynch, and coxswain Hillary Levitz placed fifth in the third final for a 17th place overall finish with a time of 7:09.54. Fordham won the third final with a time of 7:01.17 followed by Temple, Colgate, Massachusetts, Delaware, and Boston College.

In the Novice Fours competition, Delaware’s team of Amanda Mullnack, Rachael Susman, Martha Adjei, Zara Reinoso, and coxswain Anna Sung placed sixth in its heat with a time of 10:14.62. UMass won the race with a time of 8:56.22.

Delaware also placed fourth in its heat of the Second Varsity Fours competition and did not advance. The Blue Hens team of Maeve Garlick, Jamie Hedrick, Amanda Mullnack, Rachael Susman, and coxswain Anna Sung rowed to a time of 9:30.63 and finished behind Villanova, Boston College, and Fairfield.

The Hens will return to action next Saturday, Apr. 16, when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to take part in a five-way meet vs. Robert Morris, Old Dominion, Colgate, and host Bucknell.
