CAMDEN, N.J. -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing squad will open its 2011 spring season this Saturday, March 12, when the Blue Hens travel to the Cooper River to compete in a four-way meet that includes Drexel, La Salle, and host Saint Joseph’s.
The non-scoring meet will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will include competition in five events, including the Varsity Eights, Second Varsity Eights, Novice Eights, Varsity Fours, and Second Varsity Fours. The event was originally scheduled to be held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia but was switched due to flooding conditions.
Delaware’s Varsity Eights crew is expected to include Meredith Rubin, Darra Finnerty, Courtney Williams, Rachael Conway, Lauren Kanaskie, Stephanie Lynch, Ashley Maguire, Lauren Kolsky, and coxswain Marra Green. Lynch and Finnerty will serve as team co-captains this spring.
The meet will begin a challenging 2011 campaign for eighth-year head coach Laura Slice and her squad, which returns 26 letterwinners from last year’s contingent that posted a fifth place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, recorded three top 10 finishes at the Dad Vail Regatta, and had four top 10 finishes at the ECAC Mid-Atlantic/New England Regional Championships.
Delaware, now in its 13th season as a varsity sport at Delaware, will compete in eight events this season.
After the Saint Joseph’s quad-meet, the Blue Hens will travel to Rhode Island for a dual meet March 19, to Philadelphia for the Murphy Cup on Mar. 26, to Camden, N.J. for the Knecht Cup on Apr. 9-10, to Bucknell for a five-way meet with the host Bison, Colgate, Old Dominion, and Robert Morris, to Occoquan, Va. for the CAA Championships on Apr. 24, to the ECAC Regionals in Princeton, N.J. on May 1, and back to Philadelphia for the Dad Vail Regatta on May 13-14.
