Blue Hen Rowers Open Spring Season with Two Second Place Finishes at Saint Joseph's Tri-Meet

CAMDEN, N.J. -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing squad opened the 2011 spring season with a solid showing as the Blue Hens posted two second place finishes in a tri-meet with Drexel and host Saint Joseph’s Saturday afternoon on the Cooper River.

The Blue Hens posted second place finishes in the Varsity Fours and Second Varsity Fours races, was third in the Varsity Eights and Novice Eights, fourth in the Second Varsity Eights, and fifth in the Varsity Fours.

Host Saint Joseph’s swept the meet by winning all four races. The meet was originally scheduled to be held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia but was moved due to flooding.

“Today was a solid start for us,” said Delaware head coach Laura Slice. “I think we learned a lot about our team in terms of what our strengths are and what our weaknesses are. It’s a great starting point for the season ahead.”

Delaware’s Varsity Fours A crew of coxswain Hillary Levitz , Laura Wertman, Leanna Colubriale, Virginia Hall, and Sarah Baillie rowed to a time of 8:07.4 to place second, just four seconds behind Saint Joseph’s winning time of 8:03.4. The Blue Hen B boat of coxswain Anna Sung, Maeve Garlick, Zara Reinoso, Rachael Susman, and Alex Smart finished with a time of 9:06.6.

In the Second Varsity Eights competition, Delaware’s A team of coxswain Hillary Levitz, Julia Cagney, Tori Drach, Bethany Callaway, Ally Crossman, Holly Dodge, Jamie Hedrick, Valerie Glace, and Alex Smart was second with a time of 7:09.2, just two seconds slower than the winning time of 7:07.1 by the Hawks.

Delaware also placed third in the Novice Eights as the team of coxswain Maria Gallo, Sarah Slotoroff, Meredith Murphy , Rachel Boudart, Jenny Kohler, Angela Quinn, Ivy Drexel, Martha Adjei, and Amanda Mullnack) rowed to a time of 8:00.4, trailing Saint Joseph’s (7:30.6) and Drexel (7:31.9).

The Varsity Eights crew also finished third as the team of coxswain Marra Green, Meredith Rubin, Darra Finnerty, Courtney Williams, Rachael Conway, Lauren Kanaskie, Stephanie Lynch, Ashley Maguire, Lauren Kolsky) rowed to a time of 7:11.4.

The Blue Hens will continue action March 19 at the University of Rhode Island.
