Delaware Takes Second at ECAC Mid-Atlantic/New England Regionals; Novice Eights Crew Wins Title

athlete photoWEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- Led by a championship finish by the Novice Eights crew, the University of Delaware women placed second in the team standings at the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic/New England Regional Championships Sunday morning at Mercer Lake.

The Blue Hens posted 40 total points to finish second overall, finishing behind team champion Navy (51) but pushing past Colgate (27), Fordham (26), and George Washington (25) in the five-team field.

Delaware was paced by a first place effort by the Novice Eights crew (at right) but also got a second place finish from the Varsity Eights team while Varsity Fours and the Second Varsity Eights crews each finished third in their races.

“It was an awesome day for Delaware rowing,” said Delaware head coach Laura Slice. “All of our boats lived up to their potential and really raced their hearts out. As a staff, we could not be more proud of their efforts. We will start training hard to have a successful Dad Vail Regatta in two weeks.”

The victory was the first of the season for an individual Blue Hen crew.

The Novice Eights crew of coxswain Maria Gallo; Sarah Slotoroff, Jenny Kohler, Rachel Boudart, Meredith Murphy, Bethany Porter, Alexis Blandine, Angela Quinn, and Ivy Drexel) rowed to a time of 7:34.91 to win that race, besting runner-up Colgate by almost 10 seconds. Navy was third followed by Fordham.

The Delaware Varsity Eights boat of coxswain Hillary Levitz, Meredith Rubin, Darra Finnerty, Rachael Conway, Courtney Williams, Lauren Kanaskie, Lauren Kolsky, Ashley Maguire, and Stephanie Lynch posted a second place finish with a time of 7:06.82. Navy won the race in 7:02.46 followed by Delaware, Colgate, Fordham, and George Washington.

The Varsity Fours crew of coxswain Dianna Levin, Valerie Glace, Leanna Colubriale, Laura Wertman, and Sarah Baillie posted a time of 8:18.20 to finish third. Navy A won the race in 7:58.90 followed by Colgate, Delaware, Navy B, George Washington B, Fordham, and George Washington A.

In the Second Varsity Eights competition, Delaware’s crew of coxswain Marra Green, Julia Cagney, Tori Drach, Holly Dodge, Ally Crossman, Bethany Callaway, Kristen Endres, Virginia Hall, and Alex Smart rowed to a time of 7:15.36 to place third. Navy won the race in 7:10.52 followed by George Washington, Delaware, and Fordham.
