Delaware Women Rowers Open Fall Exhibition with Four Top 10 Finishes at Navy Day Regatta

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing squad opened the fall exhibition season with a solid showing Saturday as the Blue Hens posted four top 10 finishes at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
The Blue Hens placed fourth in the Collegiate Junior Varsity Eights race, sixth and ninth in the Collegiate Fours race, and seventh in the Open/Collegiate Varsity Eights competition. The regatta included many of the top men’s and women’s programs in the region.
“This regatta was a great opportunity for the team to challenge themselves and apply the technical changes we have been working on these last few weeks,” said Delaware head coach Laura Slice, who begins her ninth season at the helm of the Blue Hens this year. “We had a day of very solid racing and I could not be more proud of their efforts.”
Delaware’s top finish came in the Junior Varsity Eights competition where the Blue Hen team of Virginia Hall, Sarah Slotoroff, Jenny Kohler, Rachel Boudart, Bethany Porter, Laura Wertman, Meredith Murphy, and coxswain Dianna Levin finished fourth with a time of 14:53.45. Penn won the seven-team race with a time of 14:20.52 followed by Drexel, Navy, and Delaware.
The Blue Hens entered two crews into the Collegiate Fours race and posted two top 10 finishes as the A crew of Holly Dodge, Jaime Hedrick, Julia Cagney, Tori Drach, and coxswain Anna Sung rowed to a time of 16:13.04 to finish fourth and the B squad of Bethany Callaway, Rachael Conway, Angela Quinn, Alex Smart, and coxswain Hillary Levitz finished ninth in the race with a clocking of 16:27.09. Penn won the race with a time of 15:31.80.
In the Open/Collegiate Varsity Eights race, Delaware’s team of Callaway, Conway, Lauren Kanaskie, Lauren Kolsky, Julia Cagney, Tori Drach, Quinn, Smart, and coxswain Levitz rowed to a time of 14:55.34 to finish seventh overall. Navy won the race in a time of 14:23.81 followed by Penn, Drexel, Penn B, Saint Joseph’s, and Temple.
Delaware will continue exhibition action with a home scrimmage on Oct. 22.
