Delaware Opens Era Under New Coach Kevin Gruber with Two Second Place Finishes in Philly Quad Meet
March 9, 2013
PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing program began a new era Saturday as the Blue Hens competed in their first meet of the spring under new head coach Kevin Gruber.
Delaware competed in a quad meet with host Saint Joseph’s, Drexel, and La Salle on the Schuylkill River and posted two second place finishes among the day’s five events.
The Hens placed second in the Varsity Fours (at right) and Second Varsity Fours races, finished third in the Second Varsity Eights competition, and finished fourth in both the Varsity Eights and Novice Eights races.
“It was fun being back on the starting line,” said Gruber, who came to Delaware this past fall after spending the previous four years as assistant coach at the University of Connecticut. “The conditions were fantastic for early March and all of our crews raced hard today. We knew heading into the weekend that we were still rough around the edges and it showed in the results. The effort was great but everyone knows there is a lot we can improve upon.”
Drexel won the Second Varsity Eights and Novice Eights races while Saint Joseph’s captured the Varsity Eights, Varsity Fours, and Second Varsity Fours competitions.
The Hens saw their top finishes come in the Fours competitions as the Varsity Fours crew of coxswain Molly Gardner, Yardley Markee, Calla Cissel, Bethany Porter, and Angela Quinn rowed to a time of 8:04.4 to finish second behind Saint Joseph’s (7:50) and the Second Varsity Fours crew of coxswain Curtira Williams, Alex Cruz, Shannon Bell, Kate Flood, and Danielle Lawler came in with a time of 8:19.8 to finish just behind winner Saint Joseph’s (8:08.0).
In the Second Varsity Eights race, Delaware finished third with a time of 7:15.0, trailing winner Drexel (7:01.4) and Saint Joseph’s (7:10.4). Delaware’s team consisted of coxswain Hayley Diverio, Meredith Murphy, Sarah Slotoroff, Jenny Kohler, Jen Majcher, Denise Cirelli, Rachel Boudart, Annie Waskover, and Lilly Guttentag.
Delaware will return to action March 30 at the Murphy Cup on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
