RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman pitcher Kathleen Conway was named the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Rookie of the Week on Monday after picking up a win and a save during the Blue Hens’ series victory over George Mason this weekend.
After Delaware dropped a 1-0 decision to the Patriots on Saturday afternoon, Conway helped the Blue Hens earn the doubleheader split by firing a two-hit shutout during the 2-0 victory in the nightcap.
The Simsbury, Conn. native notched her second shutout of the season and struck out 14 batters, one shy of the school record held by Lindsay Jones, who struck out 15 George Mason hitters in March, 2006.
Conway, who picked up her second win of the season on Saturday, then earned her first career save by throwing a scoreless seventh inning during Delaware’s 4-2 victory over Mason on Sunday. She entered the bottom of the seventh with the Blue Hens holding onto a two-run cushion and allowed only a one-out bunt single.
Conway has appeared in seven games while starting three this season for Delaware, compiling a 2-5 record and a 6.00 earned run average. She leads the Blue Hens and ranks fifth in the CAA with 65 strikeouts, and also shut out Saint Francis (Pa.) while punching out 12 batters on March 13.
Jasmine Butler of James Madison was named the CAA Player of the Week, while Hofstra’s Olivia Galati and Georgia State’s McCall Langford earned Co-Pitcher of the Week honors.
Conway and the Blue Hens, who are 9-18 overall and 2-1 in the conference this season, play their home opener on Tuesday by hosting Villanova in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
