Five NCAA Tournament Opponents, First Home Invitational Highlight 2012 University of Delaware Softball Schedule

NEWARK, Del. – Five games against NCAA Tournament squads and the first regular season home tournament in school history highlight the 2012 University of Delaware softball schedule announced Wednesday.
The Blue Hens, who will be led by second-year head coach Jaime Wohlbach, open their campaign with three games at the Charlotte Tournament on Feb. 11-12, playing the host 49ers before two games against Presbyterian.
The following weekend Delaware heads to Fort Myers, Fla. to compete in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament on Feb. 17-19. The Blue Hens will play five games at the event, facing the host Eagles along with Boston College, Binghamton, and Albany twice. The Great Danes captured the America East Tournament last spring to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Hens close out the month on Feb. 25-26 with four games at the Spartan Classic when they will face host Norfolk State along with Monmouth and Army.
Delaware opens March with five games at the challenging Louisville Slugger Invitational hosted by the University of Pacific on Mar. 2-4. The Blue Hens face national power Washington, along with contests against the host Tigers and Sacramento State, followed by a pair of playoff games. Washington advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals last season and ended the year ranked No. 12 in the country, while Pacific also advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The following weekend UD travels back to the state of Florida, participating in the Florida International Tournament in Miami on Mar. 9-11. The Blue Hens will take on Lafayette, FIU and 2011 NCAA Tournament participant DePaul, followed by two playoff games.
Delaware faces Temple in a single game on Mar. 14 in the Blue Hens’ home opener, before hosting its first ever spring invitational on Mar. 16-18. The tournament features 10 total games, including four for the Blue Hens against La Salle, Norfolk State, Western Michigan and Villanova.
The Blue Hens remain home on Mar. 21 to host Delaware State in a doubleheader in the Route 1 Rivalry, before opening Colonial Athletic Association play on Mar. 24-25 with a three-game series at Towson.
Delaware is back on the road on Mar. 27 with a non-conference twinbill at Villanova, before opening an eight-game homestand with a weekend home series against George Mason on Mar. 31 and Apr. 1.
The homestand continues with a doubleheader against Saint Peter’s on Apr. 4, while the Blue Hens welcome CAA defending regular season champion Hofstra in a key conference series on Apr. 7-8.
The Blue Hens are back on the road the following week, with an Apr. 11 doubleheader at Rider before a weekend series at James Madison on Apr. 14-15.
UD faces another crucial conference series at the Delaware Softball Stadium on Apr. 21-22 when the Blue Hens welcome defending league champion Georgia State for a three-game set, before heading to Penn for a single game on Apr. 25.
Delaware then heads to UNCW for a three-game series on Apr. 28-29, before closing out its regular season with a CAA set against Drexel in Newark on May 4-5.
The four-team CAA Tournament will be held May 9-11 on the campus of the regular season champion. The Blue Hens will be looking to qualify for the tournament for the second consecutive year, after earning the fourth seed in 2011 during Wohlbach’s first season at Delaware.
