Blue Hen Senior Lara Andrews Competes For New Zealand National Team in 2012 ISF Women’s World Fastpitch Championships

WHITEHORSE, Yukon -- University of Delaware senior Lara Andrews competed for the New Zealand National Team this summer at the Canadian Open International Championship and the 2012 ISF Women’s World Fastpitch Championships.
Andrews started at third base for New Zealand, which played six games at the Canadian Open on July 4-9 in Surrey, British Columbia. The squad then competed in the prestigious Women’s World Fastpitch Championships, which was held in Whitehorse, Yukon on July 13-22. New Zealand won two of seven games to finish in 13th place at the tournament.
The Women’s World Championships are held every four years by the International Softball Federation, featuring the top 16 teams in the world. This year’s tournament was the 13th since the competition began in 1965, and featured a championship game in which Japan defeated the United States, 2-1.
Andrews, a native of Wellington, New Zealand, has started all 112 games in center field during her first two seasons with the Blue Hens. This past spring she batted .231, leading the squad with 21 RBI while adding 34 hits, eight doubles and three home runs.
